Fraunhofer is one of roughly 27 designated boat-in campsites along the Smith River Corridor, a 59-mile river float managed by Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) between Camp Baker and Eden Bridge in Cascade County. Access is by non-motorized watercraft only; there is no road access to the campsite. A lottery float permit, obtained through FWP's annual drawing held each February, is required for the trip. Campers must pack out all human waste, as pit toilets along the river corridor were discontinued. The surrounding canyon is known for limestone formations, abundant wildlife, and native fish populations. Camp Baker (the put-in) is approximately 26 miles from White Sulphur Springs.
