Bear Gulch consists of two designated boat-in campsites—Upper and Lower—located approximately 29 miles downstream from the Camp Baker put-in along the Smith River in Cascade County. Situated just below Heaven on Earth Ranch, both sites feature open grassy areas with scattered trees and shrubs. The location is notable for providing one of the easiest emergency road-access exit points along the 59-mile permitted float corridor. Overnight use requires a valid Smith River float permit issued by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. Floaters must pack out all human waste using an approved portable toilet system, as no toilet or water facilities are provided on site. Bear Gulch is part of the Smith River State Park permit network, which includes 52 designated campsites spread across 27 boat camps on public and leased land.
406-454-5840 listed as FWP Region 4 headquarters contact number for Smith River State Park.
Both Bear Gulch sites are fairly open grass fields with some trees and tall bushes, located just downstream of Heaven on Earth Ranch at approximately 29 miles. Bear Gulch is one of the easiest places to exit the river if emergency care is required.
