Black Butte is a boat-in campsite located at approximately mile 44.8 along the Smith River corridor in Cascade County, Montana, accessible only by floating the 59-mile stretch between Camp Baker and Eden Bridge. The camp consists of two areas — upper and lower — set on a high bench requiring a short but moderately steep hike from the river landing. Sites sit across from dramatic cliff faces rising from the canyon walls. A Montana FWP float permit, obtained through an annual lottery, is required to access this stretch of river. No toilets or potable water are provided; campers must pack out all waste using a personal human waste management system. The site is not recommended for large groups or young children due to the steep trail and limited privacy between the upper and lower areas.
Open Apr through Jul
