Mokowanis Lake is a remote backcountry campsite tucked into the northeastern corner of Glacier National Park, beneath the towering east face of Pyramid Peak and near Mount Merritt. The site sits at high elevation alongside the lake, accessible via approximately 14 miles of trail from the Belly River Trailhead off MT-17, near the Chief Mountain border crossing. The campsite has two sites, one designated for stock animals. A vault toilet is on-site; no treated water is available, so visitors must filter or treat water from the lake. Campfires are not permitted. A wilderness permit is required for all overnight stays, and advance reservations through Recreation.gov are recommended given the competitive demand for this area. Bears, moose, and other wildlife are frequently encountered. The lower portions of the approach trail can be muddy in early season. The campsite typically opens July 1.
