A dispersed camping area along the McCarthy Road corridor near Chitina, within Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. This remote area offers primitive camping with minimal to no facilities. Dispersed camping opportunities exist along this 60-mile gravel road leading to McCarthy and Kennecott, though much of the surrounding land is private property - campers must take care to camp only on public land. The area provides access to one of North America's largest wilderness parks. Road conditions can be challenging and require proper vehicle preparation.
There is private property located along the McCarthy Road and within Kennecott. Please take care not to camp or hike on private property.
60 miles, allow 2 hours EACH WAY. Unpaved and maintained by the Alaska state DOT. Rough road conditions and potholes are common. We recommend that you carry a full-sized spare and an adequate jack.
Dispersed camping is available on government land where you should leave no trace and pack in and pack out. There is very little dispersed camping along McCarthy Road as much of the land is private.
