A remote picnic and camping area on Prince of Wales Island within the Tongass National Forest, offering three dispersed sites along the shores of Sumner Strait. The site honors twelve individuals who perished in a plane crash in Sumner Strait, with a memorial at the beach. Access is via Forest Road 20 toward Port Protection, then Forest Road 20860 for approximately 3 miles. A 1,000-foot pathway leads through a mature spruce forest to reach the shoreline sites. The area features spectacular views of Sumner Strait, Kupreanof Island, Kuiu Island, and on clear days, the higher peaks of the mainland. Restroom facilities are available at the trailhead, but there is no potable water. The beach offers excellent opportunities for marine wildlife viewing, including whales, sea lions, seals, and migrating seabirds passing through Sumner Strait. This is a free, no-reservation area managed by the Craig Ranger District.
