Upper Slough Creek is a walk-in backcountry camping area situated in the northeastern corner of Yellowstone National Park near the Montana border. Accessed via the Slough Creek Trail, this remote destination follows the creek through wide, open meadows that are among the park's premier spots for observing wolves, grizzly bears, bison, and elk in their natural habitat. All overnight visitors must hold a valid Yellowstone backcountry use permit, obtainable in advance through Recreation.gov or in person at a park backcountry office up to 48 hours before arrival. The area is most reliably accessible from late June through September; early-season travel may be impeded by lingering snow. Select designated sites permit stock animals.
