Specimen Creek is a backcountry campground within Yellowstone National Park's Gallatin Mountain Area, accessible via the Specimen Creek Trail from a trailhead near U.S. Highway 191 on the park's northwest boundary. The trail is rated moderate to strenuous and covers roughly 16 miles round-trip through recovering burned forest and open alpine meadows. A Yellowstone backcountry use permit is required for all overnight stays and must be picked up in person at a park backcountry office within two days of the trip start date; advance reservations are available through Recreation.gov. Grizzly bears are active in this area — hiking in groups of three or more and carrying bear spray is strongly recommended. All food must be stored in approved bear-resistant containers or suspended at least 10 feet off the ground and 4 feet from any vertical surface. No pets are permitted on backcountry trails. Campfires are allowed only in established fire rings at designated campsites. An information kiosk is located at the trailhead.
