South Thorofare is a walk-in backcountry campsite in the Thorofare region of Yellowstone, one of the most remote areas in the lower 48 states. This primitive site requires hiking to access and is part of the Thorofare Creek drainage system. The site code for campsites in this area use the 6T designation (including 6T1 South Thorofare and 6T2 North Thorofare). Backcountry permits are required year-round and must be obtained through Recreation.gov, with permits picked up in person within two days of trip start during peak season (May 15-October 31). The permit fee is $5 per person per night plus a $10 reservation fee. The Thorofare region is known for its extreme remoteness and significant wildlife activity.
