Basin Bay Point is a designated backcountry campsite (site code 8R5) situated on a small peninsula on the western shore of Shoshone Lake in Yellowstone National Park. The site sits at the end of its own peninsula with short trails leading down to the lakeshore, providing excellent views across Basin Bay toward the west for sunset viewing. Located approximately half a mile off the main trail via a spur trail, the campsite offers privacy and solitude. The site is positioned about half a mile from Shoshone Geyser Basin, making it the closest campsite to this remote thermal area featuring over 80 geysers. Campers can hear geysers erupting across the lake from the campsite. The bear pole and cooking area are situated on a small bluff above the lake. This walk-in site is accessible by both backpackers and non-motorized boats. Primitive pit toilets are provided, and wood fires are prohibited at all Shoshone Lake campsites. A backcountry permit obtained through Recreation.gov is required year-round, with a maximum stay of 3 consecutive nights.

8R5 Basin Bay Point sits on the end of its own little peninsula, with short trails leading down to the shore. The bear pole and cooking area are on a small bluff above the lake. You can hear not only geese but boiling geysers across the lake.
8R5 is fabulous if you can get it - a gorgeous site well off the trail. Your campsite is a nice spot with great views to the west over Basin Bay therefore affords nice sunsets.
A backcountry permit is required year-round. Maximum 3 consecutive nights at any single campsite. All campsites have food storage poles.
