Snake River backcountry campsites are a network of designated primitive camping sites located along the South Boundary Trail in Yellowstone National Park southern wilderness. The South Boundary Trail is a moderate 11.6-mile one-way route that follows the Snake River for most of its length, connecting the South Entrance to the Harebell Creek Patrol Cabin and intersecting with the Continental Divide Trail. The trail passes through remote valleys and thermal areas in the Heart Lake and South Boundary Trail regions. Campsites in this area include sites 8C1, 8C2, 8C4, 8C5, and 8C6, each accommodating backpackers seeking wilderness experiences. Hikers must ford the Snake River near the trailhead, a crossing that can be waist-deep and dangerous even during low water due to swift, cold currents. All backcountry sites require permits obtained in advance through Recreation.gov or from park backcountry offices within 48 hours of trip start.
