Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park is a 221-acre historic park located 4.5 miles northeast of Kodiak city off Monashka Bay Road. The park served as a key coastal defense installation during World War II from 1941 to 1945, and today features remnants from that era including gun emplacements and the former Ready Ammunition Bunker, which now houses the Kodiak Military History Museum. The park offers 8 campsites primarily suited for tent camping, with 5 drive-in sites and 3 walk-in sites. RV campers should note the narrow, rustic roads are not suitable for vehicles over 20 feet. Facilities include two reservable public use cabins, a picnic shelter, and approximately seven miles of hiking trails. Lake Gertrude is stocked annually with rainbow trout fingerlings, and the coastal cliffs offer excellent whale-watching opportunities. The park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark.
