Big Lake Bottom Wildlife Management Area is a 3,894-acre primitive area managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Located adjacent to the Trinity River about 10 miles southwest of Palestine in Anderson County, this WMA features bottomland hardwood habitat and lies almost entirely within the Trinity River floodplain. The flat terrain results in shallow, slow-moving floodwaters covering the area 5 to 60 days annually, making it inaccessible for extended periods. There are no roads, so all access is limited to foot traffic only. Visitors may enjoy primitive camping (in designated areas only), hunting, fishing, birding, hiking, and wildlife photography. Common wildlife includes white-tailed deer, feral hogs, squirrels, rabbits, and waterfowl including mallards and wood ducks. Visitors 17 years and older must possess either an Annual Public Hunting Permit or Limited Public Use Permit. All users must perform daily on-site registration. Be prepared for challenging conditions - bring your own drinking water and wear appropriate footwear for muddy terrain.
