Candy Creek Wildlife Management Area encompasses 605 acres in far eastern Osage County, northeast of the town of Avant. The area was originally purchased by the US Army Corps of Engineers in the 1970s for a flood control reservoir that was never constructed. After decades of remaining idle, most land was repurchased by former owners, with two tracts deeded to the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation through the National Park Service Lands to Parks Program. The area features diverse vegetation including 74 acres of tallgrass prairie, upland timber dominated by post oak, bottomland timber with pecan trees, and old crop fields. Candy Creek flows through the main unit and contains largemouth bass and catfish. Wildlife includes deer, dove, squirrel, rabbit, quail, turkey, waterfowl, and furbearers. Camping is allowed only at the access point to the south tract. Access: approximately 0.75 miles east of Avant on State Highway 11, then northeast on access road.
