Free dispersed camping area on BLM land located along Dark Canyon Road (County Road 408), approximately 30 minutes from Carlsbad Caverns National Park. The paved main road provides access to multiple previously-used campsites suitable for RVs, trailers, tents, and vans. High-clearance vehicles recommended for spur roads beyond the main camping areas. No facilities or services available - pack in, pack out required. Popular for its solitude away from highway noise and proximity to Carlsbad Caverns. Area prone to flash flooding and receives heavy oil/gravel industry truck traffic. Known for windy conditions and excellent stargazing opportunities.

From U.S. Highway 62/180, 10 miles southwest of Carlsbad, turn west on County Road 408/Dark Canyon Road. Dispersed camping generally allowed on public lands in New Mexico for no more than 14 days within any 28 consecutive days. Campers must comply with fire restrictions and pack out all refuse.
14-day limit within 28 consecutive days. Camping prohibited within 900 feet of developed water sources. Must not dispose of refuse or sewage in manner that pollutes surrounding area.
