The Great Kobuk Sand Dunes are a vast 25-square-mile expanse of active sand dunes located within Kobuk Valley National Park, above the Arctic Circle. This remote wilderness area offers primitive camping on level surfaces adjacent to water sources along the dune edges. The dunes are accessible only by chartered aircraft, either landing directly on the sand or via float plane to the Kobuk River followed by a 2-mile backpacking trek across tundra. Summer temperatures can reach 100�F, while fall visitors may witness the Western Arctic Caribou Herd migration. No facilities, trails, or developed campsites exist in this pristine backcountry setting.
