The Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve was established in 1982 to protect one of the world's largest concentrations of bald eagles and their critical habitat. The 48,000-acre preserve encompasses river bottomland along the Chilkat, Kleheni, and Tsirku Rivers. Each fall (October-November), 3,000-4,000 eagles gather here to feed on late salmon runs. Year-round, 200-400 eagles reside in the preserve. Viewing areas are located along the Haines Highway between miles 18-24, with the main viewing pullouts at miles 19.5 and 20.9 featuring restrooms, a boardwalk viewing platform with telescope, interpretive signs, and spotting scopes. A 2-mile riverside trail offers additional viewing opportunities. Day-use only - no camping.
